From kendra at acf.org Tue Jul 6 12:28:36 2010 From: kendra at acf.org (Kendra Gurney) Date: Tue, 6 Jul 2010 12:28:36 -0400 Subject: [MassChestnutOrchards] Heat Wave and Chestnut Irrigation Message-ID: <008401cb1d28$4bc5c260$e3514720$@org> Hi All - I'm sure the recent heat has not been lost on you, and it looks like we're in for a few more very hot days in the Northeast. While I hope you are doing your best to stay near the air conditioner or swimming hole, with the increased heat so increases the need for water in our chestnut orchards. This is especially true of new plantings and recently inoculated orchards. You all know your own sites better than anyone and I trust will know if/when it is time to water the orchard(s) you manage. If it is time to water your orchard, please remember to do your best to keep cool while working outside. Aim for early in the day or late in the evening, when the temps are a little cooler and the sun less direct. If it's a big job that will keep you outside for a long time, pace yourself and don't hesitate to ask for help or take breaks. And don't forget to stay hydrated. There are some great tips for staying cool at the weather channel's website: http://preview.weather.com/outlook/wxready/articles/id-68 I know this is all common sense stuff, but it's good to remember that heat like this, especially when it was relatively cool at the beginning of last week, is tough on the body. Hope you all had a great holiday weekend and are finding ways to beat the heat! I saw the note, but didn't know who sent the sample. Dear Mr. Meiklejohn, Unfortunately, the tree appears to be a pure Chinese chestnut tree, as indicated by: the shiny tops on ovate leaves; the fairly small teeth, not forward pointing; the somewhat light-colored twig; the short (< 0.5 mm) hairs at right angles to the abaxial midrib; the long-stalked, capitate glandular hairs on the abaxial midrib; the small, cigar shaped glandular hairs on the abaxial lamina. There are quite a few chestnut trees on the mountains, such as above Salisbury, in that part of CT. Keep up the good work! Fred Frederick V. "Journal of The American Chestnut Foundation" is basically the same title as the past Journal, just in a new format, however the issue and volume numbers were rest to issue 1, volume 1. This could get confusing when referencing a particular volume. I mentioned this to those directly involved with producing the magazine and the numbering of the next issue should pick up where the old format of the Journal left off. Thanks for catching that! We might want to add $5 per month to have access to more picture storage. The volunteers were divided up into two groups with specialist for boring holes, applying inoculum, and taping the sites. One volunteer was in charge of reading the orchard map to make sure the proper trees were being treated. This process is quite simple once each member of the team learns his job. We encourage all members to help with inoculations next season, as our chapter will be inoculating thousands of trees over the next few years. These trees have been growing for seven years now and are of the proper size to challenge with two different strains of the chestnut blight. As this time, the only way we can tell if the correct number of genes for resistance were conferred to an individual tree is by seeing how each tree reacts to its blight wound. Most trees will succumb to this challenge but 8% of our trees will have the appropriate reaction to be spared and continue in our breeding program. The survivor trees will create nuts for our seed orchards. With one more selection, we will have trees with Massachusetts genes and blight resistance. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Check our website masschestnut.org and our email newsletters to see how you can become involved in this exciting stage of our restoration efforts. Check our website masschestnut.org and our email newsletters to see how you can become involved in this exciting stage of our restoration efforts. The session will be held Monday, August 9, from 12:30 to 5:00 p.m. in Concord, New Hampshire. This past April at the White House Conference on America's Great Outdoors, President Obama signed a memorandum establishing the America's Great Outdoors Initiative to develop a conservation agenda worthy of the 21st century and to reconnect Americans with our great outdoors. The President understands that protecting and restoring the lands and waters that we love and reconnecting people to the outdoors must happen at the local level. Therefore, President Obama directed the principal leaders of the America's Great Outdoors Initiative to travel across the country to listen and learn from people directly involved in finding grassroots solutions to conserving our lands and waters and reconnecting Americans to the outdoors. The President indicated that the sessions should engage the full range of interested groups, including tribal leaders, farmers and ranchers, sportsmen, community park groups, foresters, youth groups, businesspeople, educators, state and local governments, and recreation and conservation groups. Private working forests play a critical role in providing for green markets, rural economic development, habitat for animals and birds, places where people go for refuge and wonder, and responding to climate change. This public listening session and discussion is an opportunity for leaders of the America's Great Outdoors Initiative to hear from you about the challenges and opportunities facing working forests on private lands and about solutions for building a21st-century private working forest land conservation and recreation agenda and for reconnecting people with the outdoors.
