[MassChestnutOrchards] Seed Orchard with The Trustees of Reservations

I am representing The Trustees of Reservations (TTOR) in the acquisition from the Beals family of Chestnut Hill Farm in Southborough.  Phil Beals was a trustee and past president of the Worcester County Horticultural Society, which runs Tower Hill in Boylston, where the Mass Chapter has the demonstration planting that Brad has so carefully tended.  Phil has passed away, and his family in working with TTOR to preserve Chestnut Hill Farm as open space, with agriculture and forestry programs.

Given the connections, I asked TTOR if there was any interest in allowing us to use 1-2 acres of the Chestnut Hill Farm as a seed orchard, pointing out that we’d need a 30 year commitment.  I’ve had a very positive response, on which I can report at Saturday’s Board Meeting.  My sense is that if we can do the initial layout and nurturing for the first several years, TTOR will take care of mowing between trees, and would use the seed orchard for interpretative purposes.
