Hi Fred,
First, my apologies for miss-spelling your name. I had noticed the miss-spelling, but only after I had sent the message.
Perhaps the most likely cause for the absence of female flowers on the Haskell tree may be its prolific production of burrs last year. I have not found any females as of this late date even though many of the male flowers have already turned brown. 
There are some interesting observations on John Emery's Wayland orchard. On several trees, Some of the male flowers are past prime while others are only now becoming mature--very obvious two distinct stages--perhaps a result of the weather veriations this year. Similarly, there are two stages of female flower maturity--one stage has buds larger than marbles; the other stage has buds only a quater inch diameter or less.
I thought you might find this to be interesting.
