Also I learned one year that it's best to specify to folks harvesting the bags, that they cut off the minimum necessary. One time I received a bag full of nut bags with long branches attached, probably didn't help the next year's growth...

John:
If at some point a reason arises to promote more vigorous blooms for the next year's season on selected trees, then I would recommend trying bonemeal. Bonemeal generally encourages fruit and root growth. I've used it numerous times over many years on my dogwood trees. Each year I've applied it, the next year's blossoms (and fruit) have been lush.

Maybe trees just tend to be more erratic up here, for whatever reason.
Also, I have many orchard trees which are pushing 30 ft. now, and in full sun, and they have yet to bloom at all. (The blighted ones do generally get goosed into bloom when smaller.)
I sometimes wonder what the implications of this would be to our local breeding program, and whether giving the trees certain nutrients (or withholding them from them) would push them into bloom earlier in their life span. Of course all our inoculated BC trees will be goosed by blight to some degree I guess. John
