Version #1: Final Paragraph On Third Panel

Of

TACF Orchard Sign In Granville, MA

[Use photo from the standard TACF 3rd panel]

The TACF orchard on this property [see map for directions] was planted in 2004-2005. It is a 3rd generation backcross [BC3] orchard. It is one of 30 orchards in the MA/RI Chapter of TACF. Fifteen State Chapters from Maine to Georgia provide regional genetic diversity to the breeding program. Native American Chestnuts are being sought throughout the tree’s former range to be incorporated into the extensive breeding program now underway. We are close to having this precious tree back! TACF plans to start reintroducing these trees in forest trials by 2010 in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service. In MA & RI we hope to begin forest trials soon thereafter.

This tree is unusual for surviving the blight over a number of years. It is an interesting example of the native American chestnuts that are being sought throughout the tree’s former range to be incorporated into the extensive breeding program now underway. We are close to having these precious trees back! Fifteen State Chapters from Maine to Georgia provide regional genetic diversity to the breeding program. The MA/RI Chapter of TACF now operates about 30 orchards. TACF plans to start reintroducing blight-resistant trees in forest trials by 2010 in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service. In MA & RI we hope to begin forest trials with locally-bred stock soon thereafter.

For

South Kingstown, R.I.

[Use Uxbridge photo – see attachment Uxbridge Orchard 5.jpg]

[Photo Caption: “ Local Orchard With Young Trees”]

We are close to the goal: TACF is currently expanding the regional diversity aspect of its breeding program and this orchard, maintained through a partnership involving MA-TACF, the URI Master Gardeners and the South Kingstown Land Trust, is part of that endeavor. Native trees are being sought throughout the tree’s former range for the breeding program so that greater genetic diversity will be incorporated into the resulting blight-resistant trees. TACF plans to start reintroducing trees in forest trials by 2010 in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service and university partnerships.
