With all these good leads coming in for seed orchard sites,I think we need a person to be the point of contact for seed orchard development. I'd prefer not to?wait till the spring meeting,so since he has shown a lot of interest in seed orchard development, I've asked John Meikeljohn to take this on. John will be the person we can direct Seed Orchard site leads to, and?with all of your input, develop a list of basic requirement for seed orchard sites. Like in 2001 with BC3 orchards, we, as a chapter will have to turn the seed orchard plans from national?into a plan that is workable for us here in Mass.?Since he lives in western Ma, he may need our help in?checking out?sites in the eastern part?of the state, help him out if you can. ? let me know?if you have questions -Jamie?? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?I'm thinking that? would be a good choice for this. ? ? Check for errors and please let me know by this coming weekend whether or not you want any further changes or new wording for a specific orchard or site. Thanks, in advance, for your prompt response. Here are the 3 versions: Version #1: Proposed Final Paragraph On Third Panel Of ACF Orchard Sign In Granville, MA The TACF orchard on this property [see map] was planted in 2004-2005. It is a 3rd generation backcross [BC3] orchard. It is one of 30 orchards in the MA/RI State Chapter of TACF. Fifteen State Chapters from Maine to Georgia provide regional genetic diversity to the breeding program. Native American Chestnuts are being sought throughout the tree?s former range to be incorporated into the extensive breeding program now underway. We are close to having this precious tree back! TACF plans to start reintroducing these trees in forest trials by 2010 in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service. In MA & RI we hope to begin forest trials soon thereafter. Version #2: Proposed Final Paragraph On Third Panel For Bungy Road Chestnut Tree in R.I. This tree is an excellent example of the Native American Chestnuts that are being sought throughout the tree?s former range to be incorporated into the extensive breeding program now underway. This will be for South Kingstown, RI. Everything else looks good to me. Thanks! We are close to the goal: TACF is currently expanding the regional diversity aspect of its breeding program and this orchard, maintained through a partnership involving MA-TACF, the URI Master Gardeners and the South Kingstown Land Trust, is part of that endeavor. Native trees are being sought throughout the tree's former range for the breeding program so that greater genetic diversity will be incorporated into the resulting blight-resistant trees. TACF plans to start reintroducing trees in forest trials by 2010 in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service and university partnerships. -----Original Message----- From: masschestnutorchards-bounces at masschestnut.org [mailto:masschestnutorchards-bounces at masschestnut.org] On Behalf Of John Meiklejohn Sent: Tuesday, February 10, 2009 9:26 AM To: masschestnutorchards at masschestnut.org Subject: [MassChestnutOrchards] Update on wording of ACF Orchard Signs to beordered Hi Folks: Regarding the ACF Orchard Sign order, we now have 3 versions of the wording for the final paragraph of Panel 3. In my experience it's hardly ever possible to get a great shot of the whole tree, but this at least shows the tree with leaves on. Admittedly, the yellow tape isn't the most beautiful, but does actually help to call the tree out and makes it look like a "working tree" (if that makes any sense!). Its bark is very interesting, Sarah thought hypovirulence might be occurring (for any new folks, hypovirulence involves an infection of the blight fungus by a virus that reduces its deadliness, makes it "hypovirulent". Unfortunately this hasn't worked large-scale in North America as a way to combat blight as our blight is very diverse genetically, but some trees are preserved by it.) -----Original Message----- From: Kendra Gurney [mailto:kendra at acf.org] Sent: Tuesday, February 10, 2009 10:39 AM To: Federowicz, Yvonne Marie; masschestnutorchards at masschestnut.org Cc: roy at najecki.com Subject: RE: [MassChestnutOrchards] Update on wording of ACF Orchard Signsto be ordered Hi Yvonne - My 2 cents would be to use the 1st photo from the website, which shows the tree from a good distance. Native American Chestnuts are being sought throughout the tree's former range to be incorporated into the extensive breeding program now underway. This tree is an excellent example of the Native American Chestnuts that are being sought throughout the tree's former range to be incorporated into the extensive breeding program now underway. We are close to having these precious trees back! Fifteen State Chapters from Maine to Georgia provide regional genetic diversity to the breeding program. The MA/RI State Chapter of TACF now operates about 30 orchards. TACF plans to start reintroducing these trees in forest trials by 2010 in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service. In MA & RI we hope to begin forest trials soon thereafter. Version #3 Proposed Final Paragraph On Third Panel Of 5 of the 7 Orchard Signs For MA/RI To Be Ordered In Feb. '09 The TACF orchard on this property is one of about 30 orchards in the MA/RI State Chapter of TACF. Fifteen State Chapters from Maine to Georgia provide regional genetic diversity to the breeding program. Native American Chestnuts are being sought throughout the tree's former range to be incorporated into the extensive breeding program now underway. We are close to having this precious tree back! TACF plans to start reintroducing these trees in forest trials by 2010 in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service. In MA & RI we hope to begin forest trials soon thereafter. Note: If anyone has a picture they want used next to this last paragraph, please let me know. Today I visited the Medway and Wrentham orchards. The snow is mostly gone at both orchards. At Medway there was slight vole damage to some trees. It looked like they tried the bark and found it not to their liking. No trees were completely girdled. Some had only a few chew marks. There was evidence of heavy vole pathways chewed through grass at the ground surface in several places. There has been good mowing between rows and this makes voles visible to hawks and owls when there is no snow cover. Two hawks were flying overhead while I was there. Some Autumn Olive at the edge of the field had heavy bark girdling. As a sign of the coming spring, redwinged blackbirds were in the nearby wetlands. There was no vole damage in Wrentham and I saw no deer damage at either orchard. Rufin -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... While it's winter so it's hard to tell what is alive on a tree, it looks similar to 2005 - lots of dead areas with live areas springing up among them. Not a pretty tree but it's surviving! I put this online quickly - the green ones are from 2005 and the snowy, bare ones are from today, 2009. I think that the Glocester people did a great job protecting an area around this tree, and there is a perfect spot for an educational sign right on the border of its area, where the school grounds start. A sign would be very visible to people coming into the school. None of my pictures are fabulous, any ideas? Given the wide host range of ALB it wouldn't surprise me if it would be a host, but at this point, I don't think it is an issue that should be of great concern. Chestnuts will have enough of a hurdle just overcoming the blight disease. Because ALB has a choice of many tree species that are highly preferred (box elder, sugar maple and other Acer species, etc.), they may not represent a major threat to Chestnut. I am sure if ALB becomes more prevalent in our environment and American chestnut trees do to it will become an issue. I noticed that Chestnut is in the same family as beech but I haven't heard if they found it susceptible to ALB. I suggest you contact Al Sawyer, from USDA APHIS or Kelli Hoover, of Penn State. John Meiklejohn Version #1: Proposed Final Paragraph On Third Panel Of TACF Orchard Sign In Granville, MA [Use photo from the standard TACF 3rd panel] The TACF orchard on this property [see map for directions] was planted in 2004-2005. It is a 3rd generation backcross [BC3] orchard. It is one of 30 orchards in the MA/RI Chapter of TACF. *********************** Version #2: Proposed Final Paragraph On Third Panel Of Bungy Road Tree in R.I. [Use photo #2223 in attachment] [Photo Caption: ?The 2004 & 2005 Pollinations Produced Nuts For Local Breeding?] This tree is unusual for surviving the blight over a number of years. It is an interesting example of the native American chestnuts that are being sought throughout the tree?s former range to be incorporated into the extensive breeding program now underway. We are close to having these precious trees back! Fifteen State Chapters from Maine to Georgia provide regional genetic diversity to the breeding program. The MA/RI Chapter of TACF now operates about 30 orchards. TACF plans to start reintroducing blight-resistant trees in forest trials by 2010 in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service. In MA & RI we hope to begin forest trials with locally-bred stock soon thereafter. *********************** Version #3: Proposed Final Paragraph On Third Panel For South Kingstown, R.I. [Use Uxbridge photo ? see attachment Uxbridge Orchard 5.jpg] [Photo Caption: ? Local Orchard With Young Trees?] We are close to the goal: TACF is currently expanding the regional diversity aspect of its breeding program and this orchard, maintained through a partnership involving MA-TACF, the URI Master Gardeners and the South Kingstown Land Trust, is part of that endeavor. Native trees are being sought throughout the tree?s former range for the breeding program so that greater genetic diversity will be incorporated into the resulting blight-resistant trees. TACF plans to start reintroducing trees in forest trials by 2010 in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service and university partnerships. ***************************** Version #4: Proposed Final Paragraph On Third Panel Of 4 of the 7 Orchard Signs For MA/RI To Be Ordered In Feb. ?09 [Use Photo From Standard TACF 3rd Panel] The TACF orchard on this property is one of about 30 orchards in the MA/RI Chapter of TACF. Native American Chestnuts are being sought throughout the tree?s former range to be incorporated into the extensive breeding program now underway. We are close to having this precious tree back! TACF plans to start reintroducing these trees in forest trials by 2010 in cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service. *********************** Version #3: Final Paragraph On Third Panel For South Kingstown, R.I.
